My name is Brick Andrews. I am 30-something and married with children. When I started this blog, I was living a salaried, suburban, stressed, 60 hour workweek malaise. While thankful for many blessings, I found this kind of existence a little unfulfilling. Life Sutra is my mission to rectify that.

Life Sutra

Sutra is a Sanskrit word that means a thread that holds things together. Metaphorically, a sutra refers to a collection of aphorisms, or rules in the form of a manual. One could say that life sutra means a manual on the discipline of life. Life Sutra is my attempt to find and compile “rules of life”. Specifically, to discover how one lives fully while working more efficiently and effectively.

How It Started

Over the years I have read and tried all kinds of success formulas, productivity systems and self-improvement programs. In 2007, I come across The 4-Hour Work Week. The author, Tim Ferriss, suggests we can be more effective working 4 hours a week instead of 40, and live our dreams now instead of defering them until retirement. I was hopeful that this book would hold some secrets for transforming my lifestyle. I wondered, could this really change my life? Perhaps I would only be able to make some incremental improvements. Perhaps it wouldn’t help at all. I decided to find out. I decided to follow the “instructions” in the book earnestly and seriously and to create an on-line journal documenting my successes and failures.

What Life Sutra Is Today

Over time, all things evolve. I soon realized a few things:The 4-Hour Work Week is not the only blueprint for lifestyle change. It, in fact, complimented a lot of other material I have read, followed, or applied over the years. There are many philosophies, schools of thought and systems out there that claim to enhance our work and personal lives. I continue to find value for myself in many of them. While I am still on a quest for a four hour work week, I am finding and applying other bits of wisdom along the way - from the more mundane (like how to organize my stuff) to the sublime (such as the attributes of great leaders). I want to share what I learn with you, and I hope you will do the same through your comments and feedback!

Please note, this site is not endorsed by Timothy Ferriss, Crown Publishing, or anyone actually.  It is certainly not endorsed by my employer. I am just someone who read The 4-Hour Workweek!
