My name is Brick Andrews. I am 30-something and married with children. When I started this blog, I was living a salaried, suburban, stressed, 60 hour workweek malaise. While thankful for many blessings, I found this kind of existence a little unfulfilling. Life Sutra is my mission to rectify that.

Life Sutra

Sutra is a Sanskrit word that means a thread that holds things together. Metaphorically, a sutra refers to a collection of aphorisms, or rules in the form of a manual. One could say that life sutra means a manual on the discipline of life. Life Sutra is my attempt to find and refute the "rules of life" dictated by conventional wisdom. In dismissing the accepted way of doing things, I hope to better understand a more powerful set of "rules of life". My wish is for these to lead to personal fulfillment, efficiency and effectiveness.

How It Started

Over the years I have read and tried all kinds of success formulas, productivity systems and self-improvement programs. In 2007, I came across The 4-Hour Work Week. The author, Tim Ferriss, suggests we can be more effective working 4 hours a week instead of 40, and live our dreams now instead of deferring them until retirement. At first, I was hopeful that this book would hold some sort of secret for transforming my lifestyle.

What Life Sutra Is Today

I soon realized that what drew me to the The 4-Hour Work Week was not so much a desire to have a specific blueprint for lifestyle change, but the questioning of a fundamental assumption or "rule of life" (in this particular case, that we must work 40+ hours a week and defer our best plans until retirement).

The Life Sutra is about identifying and questioning fundamental assumptions that pervade our work, our homes and our lifestyle. It is about creating an opening for new possibilities and revolutionary change. Sometimes the bits of wisdom I come across are rather trivial or mundane (like how to organize my stuff) and I want to share these with you too. I hope you will do the same through your comments and feedback!
